think : future
what do you see
Emotions colour our impressions of the future. Images of what the world will be like in
the years ahead are based on how we feel about those years. Fear, despair and
uncertainty translate into pictures of unliveable cities, destroyed nature, conflict.
Hope, trust and curiosity evoke images of new ways of life, world peace and
interplanetary life. Dystopia, utopia – big, epic world views, mirrors of our inner world.
We have lively imaginations when it comes to those future worlds.
But can we be as imaginative about ourselves?
How do we humans see ourselves when we look forward in time?
Who are we now, and who will we become?
Change – how does it feel?
Can we practise change?
Can we practise for the future?
Inspired by the French cult novel La Horde du Contrevent (2004) by the sci-fi author
Alain Damasio, the choreographer Lisi Estaras has created a dance production in
which she leaves the world we know far behind. She has assembled a cast who are
seldom seen in our theatres: an intergenerational group of dancers with and without
disabilities. RAFAGA means a sudden, fierce gust of wind. An obstacle to our freedom
of movement, a disruption of our balance. But it also heralds something new.
Something whose exact form is still unknown. And might this new form be something
that each of us already carries inside?
"We can feel it: some forces refuse to move forward, voices cling to a stand still.
We understand that we entered a deeper danger.
There are those who want to slow down our momentum,
prevent us from changing.
But we move forward. We rise.
We are the knights of this metamorphosis."
