Junior Mthombeni
Junior Mthombeni is a theatre maker, actor and musician. Since 2016, Junior has been one of the artistic faces of KVS and is active as a creator within the collective Jr.cE.sA.r. In collaboration with a multi-ethnic cast, Mthombeni captures the metropolitan context in contemporary music theatre, drawing on influences from urban arts and musical traditions from all corners of the globe.
His work as a director offers a theatrical interpretation of hot-button issues from the news, whilst also exploring the contemporary significance of inspiring figures, movements and events from the (recent) past, such as Malcolm X, Dear Winnie and Who’s Tupac.
Alongside his creative work, he is also embarking on a unique, valuable and dynamic journey with SOCHA. This is a community of artistic performers from all generations, cultures and disciplines. Veterans and newcomers to the performing arts seek out unexpected forms, urgent stories and uncharted theatrical territory. Slam, hip-hop, theatre, literature, dance, visual arts, music… They have found an ambitious and dynamic artistic mix that comes together in the On Fire performances. Burning City is the culmination of these On Fires, in which the new city is expressed in all its glory, rawness and inequality.
