accessibility

Wannes Cré

hetpaleis is a city theatre and an open house where everyone is welcome. We therefore do everything we can to remove any barriers and make your visit as pleasant as possible. If the standard facilities are not sufficient for you, we’ll be happy to work with you to find suitable solutions.
Take a look at the possibilities below.

Is hetpaleis accessible to wheelchair users?

The auditoriums, doors and lifts at hetpaleis are adapted for wheelchair users. You can access the building without any obstacles.

main auditorium
Our wheelchair spaces are located in rows O and P. Contact a member of the info & tickets team to reserve a place. Go to the ticket desk upon arrival. A staff member of hetpaleis will be happy to escort you to your place.

small auditorium
There are no designated wheelchair spaces in the small auditorium. However, it is possible to sit next to the seating area. You will be seated in the front row.

toilets
Adapted toilets are available in the foyer (near the main auditorium) and at the artists’ entrance (on the side of the small auditorium).

parking
Interparking Stadsschouwburg has four parking spaces for people with disabilities. Interparking Horta has five such spaces and Parking Arenberg two.

Can I use a lift to get to the auditorium?

Lifts are available for those who are (temporarily) less mobile, in a wheelchair or visiting hetpaleis with a pram.

main auditorium
The foyer and hetgeluk are accessible without any obstacles; the main auditorium is accessible via a lift. To limit the number of steps in the auditorium, we recommend booking a seat in rows O, P, Q or R.

small auditorium
The small auditorium, located on the fifth floor, is also accessible via a lift.
However, there are a few short flights of stairs from the foyer. Are you unable to take these stairs? No problem, a staff member of hetpaleis will be happy to guide you via the outside of the building, along Theaterplein and Meistraat, to the artists’ entrance.

Sometimes we ask visitors to wait in the corridor near the auditorium until everyone is present. Are you unable to stand for long periods due to a (temporary) medical condition? Let a staff member of hetpaleis know. We’ll work with you to find a solution that is comfortable for you.

workshop spaces and rehearsal rooms
All workshop spaces and rehearsal rooms are accessible by lift.

lift dimensions

  • lift, main auditorium (L x W x H): 185 x 110 x 223 cm
  • red lift, small auditorium (L x W x H): 295 x 210 x 215 cm
  • blue lift, small auditorium (L x W x H): 193 x 173 x 215 cm
Is hetpaleis accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing?

Certainly, both the main auditorium and small auditorium are equipped with an induction loop, which amplifies the sound from the stage and transmits it to your hearing aid. Speak to a staff member of hetpaleis before the performance. We’ll then switch on the loop for you. Then set your hearing aid to the T-setting to use it.

Note that in the main auditorium, the induction loop doesn’t work on the balcony or in the first four rows closest to the stage.

Each season, hetpaleis programmes a number of performances with a Flemish Sign Language (VGT) interpreter.
You can find the next performance with a VGT interpreter in the programme of hetpaleis.

Is hetpaleis accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired?

Absolutely. Many performances are suitable for people who are blind or visually impaired. A staff member will be happy to guide you to your seat in the auditorium.
If you want to feel the set in advance or find out which voice belongs to which character, that’s possible too. Contact a member of the info & tickets team in advance.

Are you sensitive to stimuli?

Ask for a free set of earplugs at the ticket desk. We also have a limited number of noise-cancelling headphones available for children.

Would you like to relax in a separate room before or after the performance? Let a member of the info & tickets team know in advance. We’ll be happy to look into the options.

Is my assistance dog welcome at hetpaleis?

Your assistance dog is more than welcome. Contact us in advance so we can make sure we’re prepared for your visit.

How big are the seats?

main auditorium
In the main auditorium, you will be seated on folding theatre seats with armrests. The dimensions are as follows:

  • aisle: 50 cm legroom
  • seat (excluding armrests): width 42 cm – depth 48 cm
  • backrest: width 46 cm – height 45 cm

small auditorium
In the small auditorium, you will be seated on long benches without armrests:

  • aisle: 46 cm legroom
  • seat: 37 cm
  • backrest: 33 cm (full), 18 cm (cushion)
  • seat height: 46 cm
Why does hetpaleis use language icons at performances?

We use the official language icons of Huis van het Nederlands (Dutch website). This allows us to offer practice opportunities to non-native speakers who are learning Dutch. It also serves as a handy guide for a multilingual audience.

Is there a cloakroom?

There are coat hooks available in our foyer where you can easily hang up your coat.

Would you like to store something safely? Then use one of our lockers, which you can open with a token. Ask for a free token at the ticket desk or from an usher in a blue jacket. They’ll be happy to help you.

For prams, folding bikes or children’s bikes, you can attach them to a special rack. Don’t forget to bring your own bike lock, so that everything stays safe while you enjoy the performance.

There is no staffed, guarded cloakroom.

everyone is welcome

hetpaleis is a place where everyone is welcome and a safe space where everyone can be themselves. Discrimination, hatred and racism are not tolerated here. If you see something or feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to speak to one of our staff members.
