I’ve learned to tell stories. Thanks to her, I know: stories help. Stories are to the mind what breath is to the lungs. A brother and a sister. The brother is 12 and plays battle games online, where it’s a matter of life and death. He can always come back to life. But his sister, Nour, is ill and has no additional lives. She’s barely going to make it to her seventh birthday. To distract her, the brother tells her stories. Nour wants to know what it’s like to be ‘grown up’, so through his stories the brother imagines a future life for her. He lets her fly the nest, meet a boy, experience her first crush and her first heartache.
Can he lull his sister to sleep with a story and promise that he’ll never forget her?
In poetic language and with the necessary dose of gentle humour, Elvis Peeters and Nicole Van Bael wrote the novella Wat alleen wij weten. De Roovers are bringing this story to the stage. Through the craft of shadow play, an ancient theatrical tradition, they attempt to grapple with the contradiction of life and death and the fading of memories.
