One of the characters briefly smokes a pipe on stage.

It is a deliberate artistic choice to use a fat suit as a costume.

A change was coming,
and nobody knew it
but me.

Constance Doenkerbos loves her sister Meerkat and her cousin Sjarel. Uncle Jul loves writing very much, but he doesn’t love Sjarel. And Meerkat doesn’t like her cousin at all. Oh no, she loves dangerous mushrooms, mad kings and magic spells. The Doenkerbos family lives a secluded life on an estate on the outskirts of the village. There used to be seven of them, but four family members were mysteriously poisoned.

Since then, the villagers have treated the Doenkerbos family with suspicion and hostility; only Meerkat still dares to leave the estate. When Sjarel starts acting strangely, sparks really start to fly …

Behind the stately façade lies a heart that beats strongly.
Etcetera

Stef Lernous previously created Bangerik and Groezel for hetpaleis. Now he has adapted the last book of Shirley Jackson, the American author of blood-curdling stories. With CASTL, the novel is being staged for the first time by a first-rate cast: Janne Desmet, Lotte Diependaele, Bart Hollanders, Manou Kersting and Maja Westerveld.

  • A theatre production just as a theatre production should always be: intriguing, relentless, dark yet with the lightness of too much crème au beurre, and carried by a superb cast.
    — Luc, a teacher
  • A fantastic experience to see a proper show with your grandchildren.
    — Lieve, a visitor
  • It was a fun storyline, though perhaps a little complicated for the kids at times. That did mean you could let your imagination run wild, though. The set and the actors were a joy to watch!
    — Renee, a visitor
  • I loved the atmosphere of the production, which was spot on down to the last detail: make-up, costumes, set, story, facial expressions, music. It really showcased what real theatre is all about, with all its possibilities. The actors played with emotions,
